Cowboys: B+ Felix Jones RB 6'0" 200 Arkansas Mike Jenkins CB 6'0" 200 South Florida Martellus Bennett TE 6'6" 259 Texas A&M Tashard Choice RB 5'11" 215 Georgia Tech Orlando Scandrick CB 5'10" 192 Boise State Erik Walden DE 6'2" 238 Middle Tennessee State The Cowboys didn't need a lot going into this draft. Just the same, they filled some holes with great talent. Jones will be half of a tremendous 1-2 punch duo, and Jenkins should start on the other side of Newman. Bennett replaces Fasano, while Choice and Scandrick are great value guys. They didn't go after a WR however, so I can't give them an "A" grade. Eagles: A- Trevor Laws DT 6'1" 304 Notre Dame DeSean Jackson WR 6'0" 178 California Bryan Smith OLB 6'2" 228 McNeese State Mike McGlynn OT 6'5" 318 Pittsburgh Quintin Demps FS 6'0" 206 Texas-El Paso Jack Ikegwuonu CB 5'11" 194 Wisconsin Mike Gibson OT 6'4" 305 California Joe Mays ILB 5'11" 245 North Dakota State Andy Studebaker OLB 6'3" 251 Wheaton King Dunlap OT 6'9" 310 Auburn The Eagles had a very good draft, as they were able to snatch up several guys up who shouldn't have fallen to them. Laws is good enough to push Patterson for time at DT, while Jackson should make an impact on special teams as well as the receiving game. Demps and Ikegwuono are great Secondary values as well. While they did draft 3 OTs, I only see one being able to stay at OT. McGlynn and Gibson may be better suited to play at OG. For a team that gave up 47 Sacks, I would have thought that a high quality OT prospect would have been sought after. Giants: B+ Kenny Phillips FS 6'2" 208 Miami Terrell Thomas CB 6'1" 198 Southern Cal Mario Manningham WR 6'0" 181 Michigan Bryan Kehl OLB 6'2" 242 BYU Jonathan Goff ILB 6'2" 245 Vanderbilt Andre' Woodson QB 6'5" 224 Kentucky Robert Henderson DE 6'3" 278 Southern Miss The Giants used their picks wisely, and saw good talent fall to them. Both Phillips and Thomas can challenge to start at FS and CB respectively. Manningham was great value at the 95th selection overall, as were Kehl and Goff at the 123rd and 165th selections. Above all, the Woodson pick may end up being one of the better Day 2 deals of the draft 4-5 years from now. He could develop nicely. Redskins: C+ Devin Thomas WR 6'2" 215 Michigan State Fred Davis TE 6'4" 248 Southern Cal Malcolm Kelly WR 6'4" 218 Oklahoma Chad Rinehart OT 6'5" 320 Northern Iowa Justin Tryon CB 5'9" 190 Arizona State Durant Brooks P 6'0" 204 Georgia Tech Kareem Moore DB 5'11" 213 Nicholls State Colt Brennan QB 6'3" 205 Hawaii Rob Jackson DE 6'4" 259 Kansas State Chris Horton FS 6'0" 212 UCLA From a talent perspective, one has to agree that the selections of Thomas, Davis, and Kelly were great for the 'Skins passing game. However, little to nothing was done to shore up their huge needs along the D-Line. They ranked out as being one of the worst teams in the league when it came to creating Sacks, stopping the run, and stopping the pass. They should game plan to score 20+ points a game. If they don't, they may be in trouble. Bears: B+ Chris Williams OT 6'6" 315 Vanderbilt Matt Forte RB 6'2" 222 Tulane Earl Bennett WR 6'0" 209 Vanderbilt Marcus Harrison DT 6'3" 310 Arkansas Craig Steltz S 6'1" 210 LSU Zackary Bowman CB 6'1" 197 Nebraska Kellen Davis TE 6'7" 262 Michigan State Ervin Baldwin DE 6'2" 270 Michigan State Chester Adams OG 6'4" 335 Georgia Joey LaRocque OLB 6'2" 226 Oregon State Kirk Barton OT 6'5" 310 Ohio State Marcus Monk WR 6'4" 222 Arkansas The Bears landed great prospects without having to sacrifice anything for them. Williams will add better protection for the QB, while Forte and Bennett will be expected to see time at their respective positions. Harrison is a beast at DT, and is too good to not see rotation time. Steltz and Bowman may have to stand in line, but they'll see the show before long as well. I think Kirk Barton was a 7th Round steal, who could end up making this squad as a back up. QB is the only position where I think they should have made a move and didn't. However, this is big. If Grossman tanks again, they won't make the playoffs despite how much surrounding talent they have. Lions: B Gosder Cherilus OT 6'7" 315 Boston College Jordon Dizon OLB 6'0" 229 Colorado Kevin Smith RB 6'1" 217 Central Florida Andre Fluellen DT 6'2" 296 Florida State Cliff Avril OLB 6'3" 252 Purdue Kenneth Moore WR 5'11" 195 Wake Forest Jerome Felton FB 6'0" 246 Furman Landon Cohen DT 6'3" 274 Ohio Caleb Campbell S 6'2" 229 Army Grabbing someone who would help reduce the 54 allowed Sack total this year was paramount. They answered the calling by adding Cherilus. The RB and LB spots were concerns as well, yet answered through the selections of Smith, Dizon, and Avril. Their pass defense finished 31st last season, and they took hits across their D-Line. While Fluellen was drafted, I'm not sure how much immediate impact he'll make. The Lions did get better here, but may need to go Secondary next year if the situation doesn't improve. Packers: B+ Jordy Nelson WR 6'3" 217 Kansas State Brian Brohm QB 6'3" 227 Louisville Patrick Lee CB 6'0" 200 Auburn Jermichael Finley TE 6'5" 243 Texas Jeremy Thompson DE 6'5" 264 Wake Forest Josh Sitton OT 6'4" 319 Central Florida Breno Giacomini OT 6'7" 303 Louisville Matt Flynn QB 6'2" 228 LSU Brett Swain WR 6'1" 200 San Diego State They jumped on Nelson too soon, but it turned out not hurting them overall. Brohm is a great selection, as Rodgers may not pan out. Woodson is aging, and Lee can push him into early retirement. Donald Lee looks solid at TE, but a lot can change in a year. Finley is capable of stepping up there if or when needed. As a whole, they selected quality guys who should be able to help this squad out sooner vs. later. Vikings: B- Tyrell Johnson FS 6'0" 207 Arkansas State John David Booty QB 6'3" 213 Southern Cal Letroy Guion DT 6'4" 303 Florida State John Sullivan C 6'4" 301 Notre Dame Jaymar Johnson WR 6'0" 176 Jackson State With just 5 selections, the Vikings covered some ground. They first added the future replacement of Darren Sharper. Then, they added a pro ready QB in John David Booty. If Jackson starts to slip, Booty will be in the wings waiting. Guion gives depth to an already strong D-Line, while Sullivan can fill a Center or OG vacancy. A new RT would have been ideal, as Ryan Cook is questionable. As it stands, none of these guys will be looked upon to contribute in 2008. Bucs: A- Aqib Talib CB 6'1" 202 Kansas Dexter Jackson WR 5'10" 182 Appalachian State Jeremy Zuttah OG 6'4" 303 Rutgers Dre Moore DT 6'4" 305 Maryland Josh Johnson QB 6'3" 198 San Diego Geno Hayes OLB 6'1" 226 Florida State Cory Boyd RB 6'1" 213 South Carolina Going into the draft, the Bucs didn't have a ton of needs. This was a solid football team last year that just needed a few minor upgrades. Talib will challenge to start as a rookie, and should be able to fill Barber's shoes once he retires. Jackson gives them some much needed youth at WR, and could immediately be a factor in the return game. Zuttah is great depth at OG, and Moore can fill gaps along the D-Line when needed. Above all, I love the Josh Johnson pick. This team has been looking for a future signal caller for years now, and just may have found their guy. He'll have time to learn the system before he starts. From the top to bottom, this was a solid draft. Falcons: B+ Matt Ryan QB 6'5" 224 Boston College Sam Baker OT 6'5" 312 Southern Cal Curtis Lofton ILB 6'0" 238 Oklahoma Chevis Jackson CB 6'0" 188 LSU Harry Douglas WR 5'11" 176 Louisville Thomas DeCoud FS 6'2" 196 California Robert James OLB 5'11" 219 Arizona State Kroy Biermann OLB 6'3" 242 Montana Thomas Brown RB 5'9" 204 Georgia Wilrey Fontenot CB 5'9" 171 Arizona Keith Zinger TE 6'4" 250 LSU Fans may have thought Dorsey should have been the play here, especially after watching Henne and Brohm fall into Round 2. I can't fault the Falcons for going after Ryan though, as there was no assurance that a QB would be there in Round 2 when they selected. They were smart to get an OT, but they traded up to take Baker too early. They selected 2 CBs with the hopes that one can provide assistance after the DeAngelo Hall departure. However, Hall is leaving big shoes, so they probably should have made this more of a priority. My only other criticism is that they didn't add another DT or DE. While LBs will help against the run, you need guys up front to help when you rank 26th in the league at defending it. Panthers: B+ Jonathan Stewart RB 5'11" 235 Oregon Jeff Otah OT 6'6" 340 Pittsburgh Charles Godfrey CB 6'0" 207 Iowa Dan Connor ILB 6'3" 233 Penn State Gary Barnidge TE 6'6" 243 Louisville Nick Hayden DT 6'4" 291 Wisconsin Hilee Taylor OLB 6'3" 242 North Carolina Geoff Schwartz OT 6'7" 335 Oregon Mackenzy Bernadeau OG 6'4" 298 Bentley The Panthers ranked 29th in the league in passing offense, yet they didn't grab a WR or a top notch WR. With that said, they signed Muhammad at WR and drafted Gary Barnidge who is much more of a receiving TE than a blocker. Their top 4 picks scream upside, and Dan Connor could be the steal of the draft. Their other selections are steady and respectable. If Delhomme can regain his top form, this team has the talent to go places. Saints: B- Sedrick Ellis DT 6'1" 305 Southern Cal Tracy Porter CB 5'11" 185 Indiana DeMario Pressley DT 6'3" 301 North Carolina State Carl Nicks OT 6'5" 341 Nebraska Taylor Mehlhaff K 5'10" 185 Wisconsin Adrian Arrington WR 6'3" 203 Michigan Their pass defense was among the league's worst, so they notched 2 DTs to add pressure on the QB, and a fine CB in Porter to immediately contribute in certain packages. While the Saints keep Brees vertical, their run blocking could be better. Nicks is a great OT who may cause some shift on the O-Line to make room for him. Without too many picks, not a whole lot could be done in terms of depth. 49ers: B Kentwan Balmer DE 6'5" 298 North Carolina Chilo Rachal OG 6'5" 315 Southern Cal Reggie Smith FS 6'1" 199 Oklahoma Cody Wallace C 6'4" 296 Texas A&M Josh Morgan WR 6'0" 219 Virginia Tech Larry Grant OLB 6'1" 235 Ohio State On paper, the 49ers look to be one of the most dominating teams. When looking at their statistics and numbers from play, you're left to shake your head. The O-Line allowed 55 Sacks this past season, so they grabbed Rachal to become a mainstay. Defensive help was also attained via the Balmer and Smith selections. I expect Balmer to play opposite of newly acquired Justin Smith, while Reggie Smith works to buck Mark Roman. It may not appear to be much, but the 3 aforementioned may make a world of difference for this team. Not drafting a QB shows faith in Alex Smith, but may have not been the right move. Cardinals: B Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie CB 6'2" 182 TSU Calais Campbell DE 6'8" 282 Miami Early Doucet WR 6'0" 212 LSU Kenny Iwebema DE 6'4" 274 Iowa Tim Hightower RB 6'0" 226 Richmond Chris Harrington DE 6'5" 264 Texas A&M Brandon Keith OT 6'5" 343 Northern Iowa The Cardinals added a Top 2 CB and a freak of a DE to their squad. Each will challenge for a starting role. Doucet replaces Bryant Johnson, and may ultimately be better. Hightower is a solid yet underrated RB who can spell Edge from time to time, while Harrington should be a decent back up at OLB and a special team's starter. This team truly didn't need much, and just may end up making the playoffs. Rams: B+ Chris Long DE 6'4" 275 Virginia Donnie Avery WR 5'11" 186 Houston John Greco OT 6'5" 320 Toledo Justin King CB 5'11" 192 Penn State Keenan Burton WR 6'1" 200 Kentucky Roy Schuening OG 6'4" 308 Oregon State Chris Chamberlain OLB 6'2" 226 Tulsa David Vobora OLB 6'1" 236 Idaho The Rams allowed too many Sacks last year without being able to create many of their own. Chris Long will change that on one side of the ball, while a healthy Pace should do the same on the other. Avery will look to fill Bruce's void, while Greco will step in if either OT can't. The rest of their picks will be works in progress, with Schuening being a Day 2 steal. This team may need 1 more draft to place their stamp, but they're on their way. Seahawks: C+ Lawrence Jackson DE 6'5" 268 Southern Cal John Carlson TE 6'5" 251 Notre Dame Red Bryant DT 6'5" 328 Texas A&M Owen Schmitt FB 6'2" 250 West Virginia Tyler Schmitt LS 6'2" 234 San Diego State Justin Forsett RB 5'8" 190 California Brandon Coutu K 5'11" 187 Georgia Cutting Alexander may impact this team more than they realize. I don't think Julius Jones is the answer, so I think they should have grabbed a RB early on. I also think this was the time to notch a young signal caller to learn the ropes under a great leader. This is a solid team, so they were in a position to add quality depth, which they did. I just don't think they did so at all the right positions. |
