Free Safeties There were 12 FS prospects taken in the last draft. Of the 12, 4 were gone within the first 100 selections. If a couple of key prospects declare in 2009, both of the aforementioned totals could be higher. There is very good value at the top of the list. One aspect that may differentiate this group from those taken in 2008 is there size and athleticism. Over the past 2 years, the average weight for a drafted FS is right around 205lbs. There are quite a few propsects here who exceed that mark, but are just as athletic. |
1) William Moore FS 6'1 225 Missouri While Mays may have better workout numbers than Moore, these two guys are almost a toss up in my book. Moore posted obscene numbers last season, as he notched 117 Tackles, 9 TFLs, 2 Sacks, 8 Interceptions, and 6 PBUs. This guy must be accounted for at all times, as he can and does wreak havoc on an Offense. While he may not post the same gaudy numbers, he's been a stud again this season. He looked great against a very prolific Oklahoma State team, not getting beat over the top. 2) *Taylor Mays FS 6'3 230 USC Mays is a man-child at the FS position. He resembles a LB with his size and hitting ability, yet he has the speed and cover skills of a CB. What's even scarier, is this kid's only a Junior. Last season he was third on his team in Tackles with 65. This is huge considering USC's talent. He also had 1 Interception and 6 PBUs against the pass. If he declares, his workout numbers will be too good for him to drop out of Round 1. 3) Rashad Johnson FS 6'0 187 Alabama This former walk-on has emerged to become one of Alabama's best defensive players. He's seen action in 36 games, and was a full-time starter last season. He didn't disappoint. He amassed 94 Tackles (57 solo), 6 Interceptions and 8 PBUs. His stats are looking just as good this year. It seems he's almost mastered Saban's difficult Secondary scheme, something many NFL players couldn't do. Good hitter who flashes excellent closing speed and ability. He's a phenomenal special teams player too. 4) Derek Pegues FS 5'10 196 Mississippi State Pegues is another great FS prospect who was a top recruit coming out of High School. In fact, he was recognized as being the only player to shut down Patrick Turner (WR-USC) in the Army All-American game. He has a ton of experience at the position, as he has seen time there since his Freshman season. He had a strong 2007 with 50 Tackles, 5 Interceptions and 7 PBUs. 5) Courtney Greene FS 6'1 210 Rutgers Greene goes into his Senior season with an impressive 38 games under his belt. He's a very well rounded prospect with solid experience at both Safety positions. Over the past three seasons, he's amassed 299 Tackles. While he is most respected for being a great tackler and hitter, he's a good pass defender as well. Unfortunately, he hasn't played up to his talent level this year. At this stage of the game, he certainly looks like a 2nd day prospect. 6) Chris Clemmons FS 6'1 210 Clemson Clemmons has been one of the most consistent and productive Safeties in the ACC over the past two years. In that time, he's tallied 196 Tackles and has had16 passes defended. In addition to being a great tackler, he's an excellent athlete with phenomenal speed. He's once again be teamed up with Michael Hamlin who's a great prospect as well. He looked very solid against Wake Forest, as he was in or around many plays. 7) Curtis Taylor 6'3 205 LSU With ex-Tiger Craig Steltz now off to the NFL, Taylor will have a new side-kick playing SS next to him. That means Taylor will need to be even better than he was last season. This may be a lot to ask of him, as he posted 54 Tackles, 3 Interceptions, and 6 PBUs. However, he came into last season having to replace former 1st-Rounder LaRon Landry, so pressure is nothing new and something he handles well. 8) *Anderson Russell FS 6'0 205 Ohio State Russell started as a Freshman until a knee injury caused him to miss the rest of the season. He came back strong last year to post 63 Tackles, 7 TFLs, 3 Sacks and 5 PBUs. While only a Junior, he's already shown that he has tremendous ability and talent. He's a big reason why Ohio State was #1 against the pass last season, allowing a very stingy 148 yards per a game. He's expected to have a monster year. 9) *Nate Allen FS 6'2 200 South Florida Allen is coming off of a monster Sophomore season where he had 84 Tackles, 4 Interceptions, and 8 PBUs. The big question, however, is whether he can duplicate that performance with CBs Mike Jenkins and Trae Williams now off to the NFL. Both were great CBs who made QBs force passes into an unfriendly Secondary. This converted QB is an excellent athlete who has both the intelligence and ability to be a star. 10) Louis Delmas FS 6'0 196 Western Michigan Delmas is having an amazing season for the Broncos, and is on pace to lead them in Tackles and Interceptions for the year. As it stands right now, he looks like he has the talent to be a middle Day 2 pick. However, not playing against elite talent may hurt his stock. 11) C.J. Spillman FS 6'0 192 Marshall Spillman is most likely the favorite to lead the Thundering Herd in tackles this season. As one would assume, he's a very sure tackler and doesn't shy away from contact. He can also hold his own againt the pass. He'll be in the hunt for all-conference honors. 12) Josh Pinkard FS 6'1 215 USC You know a team is set at the Safety position (Ellison and Mays) when a talent like Pinkard isn't even expected to start. He looked great as a Sophomore in 2005, but missed the past two seasons due to a lingering knee injury. While he may only be used as a situational/rotational player this year, he's good enough to make the most of that time and show that he's still a solid prospect. It all depends on his health. 13) Troy Nolan FS 6'2 207 Arizona State Eyes were on Nolan to see if he could do as well in D-1 as he did in the JUCO ranks. He answered by collecting 64 Tackles, 6 Interceptions, and 7 PBUs. He'll be back in the starting role, looking to solidify himself as one of the top Safeties in his conference. Nolan is an intelligent kid who's already moved on to start his graduate work. Another solid season may cause him to postpone other career plans for one in the NFL. 14) *Antonio Baker FS 5'11 200 Louisiana Tech Baker not only led his team with 118 Tackles last season, he was one of the most prolific tacklers in the WAC. He also showed good cover skills and handed in 3 Interceptions to go along with 7 PBUs. He has two years left of eligibility to get even better. As it stands today, he's probably the best Safety in the WAC. The rest of the Tech. The rest of the Secondary is average, so the unit will be tested as a whole. 15) Bo McNally FS 6'0 208 Stanford McNally's 114 Tackles, 7.5 TFLs, 2 Interceptions and 6 PBUs from last season are noteworthy to say the least. Seldom will you see a play go down on defense where McNally isn't close by. He's an aggressive player who likes to be in the mix. He's got enough pop to play SS, but is instinctive and quick enough to play at FS. Stanford is on the right track. Look for McNally to be along for the ride. Other Considerations...
